Krusheka Agro: Cultivating Resilience, One Drop at a Time

The journey of Krusheka Agro in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district is a real life example of how
simple water management practices can reshape agricultural resilience. Sitting on a plateau
near the Hindol Badamba forest range, the farm had to deal with two opposite challenges—
water running short in dry months and then too much of it during the monsoon. With no
groundwater access to the farm, regular irrigation just wasn’t an option. So, they had to go
for a direct solution—a 25-foot-deep rainwater harvesting reservoir, built to keep crops
alive through the scorching months of April and May.

The impact was quick and measurable. Around 2 to 2.5 acres of the farm is covered with
water-intensive crops like tomatoes, bitter gourd, brinjal, and baby corn, and the reservoir
turned out to be a lifesaver, cutting down reliance on outside water and keeping harvests
stable. But holding onto the reservoir brought another challenge—monsoon flooding.
Heavy rains in July and August posed a serious risk of soil erosion, especially around the
reservoir. This risked the farm’s access path, which lay between the reservoir and a nearby
stream. Fixing this needed something that worked with nature, not against it.
